Camping with our Bundle
We recently campered up and took the fam on a trip to Michigan’s gorgeous Upper Peninsula. One of the biggest stressors when travelling, especially with a family of 5, is how to feed everyone without too much fuss.. because even mom deserves some relief from cooking and cleaning now and then, but the little people cannot live on granola bars and pretzels alone!! Add trying to eat HEALTHY on top of it all and it can be a bit of a challenge while travelling. This trip went quite a bit differently though.
We had just rolled out all these new bundles at John Henry’s and so I took a Camping bundle on our family road trip to test it out. The Camping Bundle includes burgers, brats, drumsticks, deli meats & snacks from our farm. It was so nice to be able to eat healthy on this trip! It’s the perfect amount of meat for a family of 4ish to take on a 2-3 day getaway. I say 4ish because although we are a family of 5 my youngest doesn’t eat that much and we all have different appetites when travelling than we do at home. We went on a 3 day trip and we all had plenty to eat! It was just enough variety to give us choices but not so much variety that we had a ton of leftovers. We paired the Camping Bundle with some eggs for breakfast and a few deli salads and chopped veggies.
One of the cool things about this Camping Bundle is that all the meats could be prepared easily in even the most rustic settings. We stopped for a picnic lunch half way through the drive and stretched our legs at the beach. The kids ran around and admired the bridge while I threw together the sandwiches real quick. Breakfast was prepped at camp each morning over a propane burner with a cast iron skillet. You’ll have to forgive the lack of pictures of the brats, which were cooked at the beach, and the chicken and hamburgers.. both of which were cooked over the fire in a grilling basket, and it was well after dark both nights!
The Camping Bundle ships just like our other packages, in a thick Styrofoam cooler packed with Gel Ice Packs. It did such a great job keeping the meat cold that I just transported the whole thing in the shipping cooler! We tested the cooler with a digital thermometer each time we opened it up and it seriously stayed refrigerator-cold for the entire trip!
Camping for us is ultimately about getting away and unplugging, and spending quality time together… and that’s exactly what we did! I’m so glad we didn’t have to stress over food the entire trip. I will definitely be taking this bundle again on the next trip!
